John McCarthy (computer scientist)
Founding father of artificial intelligence and creator of Lisp.
He was one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence, co-authored the proposal for the Dartmouth workshop that coined the term 'artificial intelligence,' led the development of the Lisp programming language, influenced ALGOL, popularized time-sharing, and created garbage collection.

Lore & Background
McCarthy was born in Boston to an Irish immigrant father and a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant mother. During the Great Depression, his family relocated frequently before settling in Los Angeles. Both parents were active Communist Party members who encouraged learning. McCarthy graduated high school two years early, attended Caltech, was suspended for failing physical education, served in the U.S. Army, and earned a B.S. He completed graduate studies at Caltech and received a Ph.D. He also contributed to ALGOL and developed the circumscription method of non-monotonic reasoning.
Reader's Guide
John McCarthy's significance lies in his foundational role in artificial intelligence and several key computing innovations. He co-authored the proposal that defined AI as a field and created Lisp, which became the dominant programming language for AI research. His invention of garbage collection automated memory management, and his work on time-sharing systems laid groundwork for modern servers and cloud computing. McCarthy also influenced the ALGOL language and proposed the idea of utility computing, anticipating later models like cloud computing. His later work on circumscription advanced non-monotonic reasoning. Despite his atheism and shift from a Communist upbringing to conservative Republican views, his technical contributions remain central to computer science. His legacy includes advising 30 Ph.D. graduates and shaping the Stanford AI Laboratory.
